Piezography2 Set 8 (matte & glossy) is a K6 ink set (shades 1-6) with both matte and photo blacks and Piezography GO. We call this matte and glossy K6 ink set, "Piezography 2". It is designed for use with eight ink slot printers. These are the 2880, 4800, 4880, 7800/9800, 7880/9880. These printers require a manual black ink change in order to switch from matte black to photo black. The concept behind Piezography2 is that no black ink changes are required. Instead, the selection of the Piezography media profile triggers whether matte black shade 1 or photo black shade 1 ink is used.
How we do that is by placing MK in the Black ink slot and place PK in the yellow ink slot. The Piezography media profile selects which black ink to print! There is very little discnerable difference between K7 and K7. So the lightest shade 7 (which normally is placed in the yellow position) is not really missed. In its place you will have the benefit of printing matte and glossy prints without having the delay and ink waste of a black ink change.
In addition to printing both matte and glossy Piezography prints, Piezography2 ink sets can also be used to make digital negatives with the PiezoDN Software system.
So, if you wish to print on matte paper - you simply select the matte P2 curves. If you wish to print on baryta or glossy paper, you select the glossy P2 curves. Baryta and glossy printing requires a second printing of GO using the GO curve. And if you wish to make digital negatives, this ink set can do it. Just refer to our PiezoDN manual.
There is very little visual difference between a K7 and a K6 print when using the Piezography curves. We have very carefully redesigned the K6 curves. If you wish to test this difference before upgrading, you can install the P2 curves and print a P2 matte print which will use shades 1-6 on an existing K7 printer. If it meets your standards (and we believe it will), you can upgrade by purchasing only the Photo Black and the GO. It is most convenient to use new cartridges for these than trying to rinse the old. The GO is very sensitive to stain. It is not advised to use GO without using a new cart.
This set can be used in printers with 9 or 11 ink channels in which only 7 ink channels are operable. In this case additional PiezoFlush should be purchased to keep non-operating print head channels from over-heating and affecting adjacent working channels. We offer a Piezography media profile re-mapping service to map out non-operating channels in printers. This allows you to use a printer with permanently clogged channels, or aquire a potentially free printer that is no longer useful to someone printing color.
Piezography Special Edition is a unique ink set specially blended by Jon Cone for split-tone printing. Special Edition inks warm as they get darker in tone. This is the most beautiful ink set Piezography has ever released to the public.

This ink set was influenced by Cone's split-tone printmaking for photographer Gregory Colbert and his Ashes and Snow exhibitions (the Nomadic Museum) which were seen by more than 13 million people.
Special Edition on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
The Special Edition blend works on the principle that all Piezography inks are intermixable. Cone has always thought that photographers would eventually wish to make their own "blend"; secret or not. As long as the shades are not cross-mixed, any shade can be mixed with the same corresponding shade of another ink set.
Special Edition inks recipe as provided in the set:
Shade 1 = Piezography shade 1 matte black or photo black
Shade 2 = Carbon shade 2
Shade 3 = 75% Carbon Shade 3 and 25% Selenium Shade 3
Shade 4 = 50% Carbon Shade 4 and 50% Selenium Shade 4
Shade 5 = Selenium shade 5
Shade 6 = Neutral shade 6
Shade 7 = Neutral shade 7
Special Edition on Canson Rag Photographique
This ink set is designed to be used with the Piezography K7 media profiles ("curves") and QuadTone RIP. Please see the Instructions tab for a full explanation of its use.
You can expect to reach a dMax of 1.65 on matte papers such as JonCone Studio Type2 and Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. When glossy printing according to our directions you can reach dMax levels as high as 2.80. Piezography Glossy produces a finish in which you will not be able to tell where the inks end and the paper begins. When used as directed, it produces a uniform surface without any gloss differential nor bronzing.
This ink set can also produce the highest standard digital negatives with the optional PiezoDN software. Using multiple shades of black ink produces tens of thousands of more gray levels than when using color inks to produce digital negatives. You'll benefit by the same higher acuity, smoothness of tone, and shadow and highlight detail that Piezography inks give to printing. With PiezoDN software, you can expand the the dynamic range of your medium in the same way Piezography expands the dynmaic range of fine black & white printmaking.
